About Ribbons

Cairns in North Queensland, is a unique environment with much to offer. Known as the city where the Rainforest meets the Sea, Cairns is a lovely city nestled amongst mountain ranges and a magnificent coastline.

Cairns is home to the Great Barrier Reef, the World’s largest coral reef system, with nearly 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands.

With the best reef in the World, comes the best fishing in the World and it is in these sparkling tropical waters of the Far North, that the Cairns Ribbons Ladies Fishing Club have established themselves as a premier fishing club, run by women, for women.

The Ribbons Ladies Game Fishing Tournament is a huge part of the Cairns social calendar, made possible by overwhelming support of our Club members, and our wonderful sponsors.

Our History

In 1983, a group of adventurous women came up with the idea of a women’s only fishing tournament, giving them an opportunity to experience what was predominantly a male-orientated recreational pastime.

Interest in the idea grew, and in December 1984, the very first Ribbon’s Ladies Fishing Tournament was held. There was a uniqueness about the competition which sparked National and International interest and over the next few years the Club and the Tournament grew substantially.

Today, the club rivals some of the largest fishing tournaments in Australia, such as the Lizard Island Classic and the Townsville Billfishing Challenge.

2021 will be the 38th year for the Ribbon’s Ladies Game Fishing Tournament, and after the challenges that 2020 brought to the Far North Tourism industry, it’s building to be one of our biggest yet!

We’ve been a part of the Ribbons club since 2008 and love getting involved every year. My wife and daughters get in on the fishing, and I love being a part of the support crew.

Glenn Farner

I didn’t know many people when I moved to Cairns, but have made some lifelong friends in Ribbons. It’s great to meet like-minded, adventure-loving people.
